Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to contest particular calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
