Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
