"When are you chatting with the band?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The author likewise wants to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated admirers have also petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos repeatedly show them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to make music."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The band have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics detail endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international fan base.

Yet the band will consistently be their number one focus.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
