Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
