At Least 6 Perish in Stampede at Ghanaian Military Recruitment Drive
No fewer than six people have lost their lives during a stampede at a armed forces enlistment gathering held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The Wednesday's "devastating" incident seems to have been triggered by "a sudden rush of applicants who overcame security measures and stormed the gates," announced a statement from Ghana's armed forces.
Twenty-two others were injured, among them five who are in critical condition.
Thousands had turned up at the El-Wak sports venue, in the capital, Accra, with the hope of joining the military.
Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of about 32%, the latest government statistics show, and such enlistment drives typically attract massive gatherings and frequently lead to chaotic scenes.
The deadline to submit applications for this event was extended by a week to accommodate additional candidates, as some had experienced difficulties in the process.
Army spokesperson Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede occurred before the event's scheduled start of 06:20 GMT.
The nation's leader President John Mahama has gone to see the injured in medical care.
Calm has been restored, and the enlistment process has since begun.
