Administration Announces Federal Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to the public across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to block the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official ordered the government to disclose details on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

These terminations occurred on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the end of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
