2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Troubled Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Reception

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed team members about this decision through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a distinct direction.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:

Team—

I understand you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to persist.”

With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a clearer vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the feedback to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to achieve its promise to our fans.

The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. After some time of conversations, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s management and experience in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most popular titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to persist witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.

The President

Experience of the Incoming Head

The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Concept

The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and tests that evolve every match. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or go big, risk it all, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The decision is yours."

The game does not have an confirmed release date or platforms, but fans can expect further news as production advances.
